Annaprasana Procedure: Step-by-Step Vidhanam
Annaprasana Procedure
The step-by-step Annaprasana vidhanam — from sankalpa and payasam naivedyam to the baby’s first feeding and the choosing of objects.

Preparation
A clean, decorated space is arranged with the deity, kalasham and the prepared payasam. The baby is bathed and dressed in new clothes. Karishye’s purohit gathers the prescribed samagri, including the silver feeding spoon.
How Annaprasana is performed
Achamana & Sankalpa
Self-purification and a vow stating the baby’s name, gotram, nakshatram and the purpose.
Ganapati Puja
Worship of Lord Ganesha first, to remove obstacles.
Punyahavachanam & Kalasha
Purification, kalasha worship and invocation of the deities and Annapurna Devi.
Naivedyam of Payasam
The sweet payasam is offered to the deity as naivedyam and sanctified.
Annaprasana — first feeding
The father or grandfather feeds the baby the first morsel of payasam with a silver spoon, with mantras.
Jeevika Pariksha (optional)
The baby is offered a tray of objects; the one chosen is taken as a happy sign of their path.
Aashirvachanam & prasadam
Blessings from elders and the purohit, and distribution of prasadam.
How long it takes
Annaprasana usually takes about 1 to 1.5 hours, a short and joyful ceremony. Karishye’s purohit brings everything and guides the family through each step.
