Satyanarayana Katha: The Five Stories Explained
Satyanarayana Katha
The five-chapter Satyanarayana Katha explained — the stories at the heart of the vratam and the lesson each one teaches.

The Satyanarayana Katha
The reading of the Satyanarayana Katha is the central act of the vratam. Drawn from the Reva Khanda of the Skanda Purana, it is told in five short chapters, each illustrating a truth about devotion, honesty and keeping one’s word. The family and guests listen with devotion before receiving the prasadam.
The stories, one by one
The origin of the vratam
Sage Narada, moved by the suffering of people on earth, asks Lord Vishnu for a remedy. The Lord reveals the Satyanarayana Vratam — its method and its power to grant prosperity and liberation — which Suta Maharshi later narrates to the sages of Naimisharanya.
The poor brahmin
A poor brahmin in Kashi is taught the vratam by the Lord, who appears in disguise. He performs it with faith and is freed from poverty — showing that sincere devotion, not wealth, is what the Lord values.
The woodcutters & the merchant
Woodcutters who witness the vratam prosper by performing it. A childless merchant, Sadhu Vaishya, and his wife Leelavati vow to perform it and are blessed with a daughter, Kalavati — but the merchant delays fulfilling his promise.
The broken promise
Having forgotten his vow, the merchant and his son-in-law are wrongly imprisoned and their wealth lost. When Leelavati and Kalavati remember and complete the vratam with devotion, the Lord’s grace frees them and restores their fortune.
The king who scorned the prasadam
Returning home, the merchant slights the Lord and his ship’s cargo turns to nothing; humbled, he worships again and it is restored. Finally, King Tungadhwaja refuses the prasadam and suffers great loss, until he repents and partakes of it — a lesson never to disregard the Lord’s prasadam.
What the Katha teaches
Across its five chapters the Katha returns to one message: worship the Lord with a truthful heart, keep the promises you make, and honour the prasadam. Karishye’s purohits read the Katha clearly in Telugu so the whole family can follow and reflect. See the full procedure and the prasadam recipe.
