Before the Abhishekam

Preparation

A Shiva Linga is installed and decorated, and the abhishekam vessels and eleven dravyas are arranged with bilva (maredu) leaves. The purohits prepare for the Sri Rudram parayana and the family takes part with devotion.

Step by Step

How Rudrabhishekam is performed

Achamana & Sankalpa

Self-purification and a vow stating the family’s names, gotram and the purpose.

Ganapati Puja

Worship of Lord Ganesha first, to remove obstacles.

Kalasha Sthapana

Installation and worship of the kalasham, invoking divine presence into the sacred water.

Shiva Avahana

Invocation of Lord Shiva into the Linga, with dhyana and shodashopachara.

Rudra Parayana & Abhishekam

Chanting of the Sri Rudram (Namakam & Chamakam) while bathing the Linga with the eleven dravyas — the heart of the ritual.

Archana & Bilva

Offering of bilva leaves and archana with Shiva’s names.

Rudra Homa & Mangala Harati

An optional homa with the Rudram, concluding harati and distribution of prasadam and vibhuti.

Duration

How long it takes

An Eka Rudram is completed in about 1.5–2.5 hours; larger scales (Laghu, Maha, Ati Rudram) run across a day or several days with many purohits. Karishye arranges the purohits, timing and all dravyas.
