The Sacred Sound

The Sudarshana mantra

The Sudarshana mantra invokes the protective power of Vishnu’s chakra. It is chanted with devotion and precise pronunciation during the homam. Two forms are commonly used — the Sudarshana Gayatri and the Sudarshana moola (root) mantra.

Sudarshana Gayatri

For invoking the chakra

“Om Sudarshanaya Vidmahe,
Maha Jwalaya Dhimahi,
Tanno Chakrah Prachodayat”

We meditate upon Sudarshana, the great blazing one; may the chakra inspire and protect us.

The Root Mantra

Sudarshana moola mantra

The longer moola mantra praises the Lord and invokes the chakra to remove all harm:

Moola Mantra (excerpt)
“Om Kleem Krishnaya Govindaya Gopijana-vallabhaya … Om Namo Bhagavate Maha-sudarshanaya, Deeptre Jwala-pareetaya, Sarva-dikshobhana-karaya Hum Phat”

The mantra should be learned and chanted under the guidance of a knowledgeable purohit for correct pronunciation (uchcharana) and metre.

Why It Matters

The role of mantra in the homam

In a homam, the power lies in precise mantra recitation paired with the sacred fire. Karishye’s purohits chant the Sudarshana mantra the prescribed number of times (108 or 1,008) with correct metre, which is what awakens the ritual’s protective energy. See the full procedure.
