Before the Puja

Preparation

A clean, sanctified space is prepared with the kalasham (a sacred water vessel) at its centre, adorned with mango leaves, coconut, turmeric and kumkum. Karishye’s purohit brings the prescribed samagri and confirms the muhurtham.

Step by Step

How Udakasanthi is performed

Sankalpa & Ganapati Puja

A vow stating the family and purpose, and worship of Lord Ganesha to begin without obstacles.

Kalasha Sthapana

The kalasham is installed and the waters of the sacred rivers are invoked into it.

Varuna Avahanam

Varuna, the Lord of Waters, is invoked into the kalasham along with the devas.

Udaka Shanti Parayanam

The Udaka Shanti mantras of the Yajurveda are chanted at length to charge the water.

Dhoopa, Deepa & Naivedyam

Incense, lamp and offerings are made to the sanctified kalasham.

Prokshanam (sprinkling)

The shanti udaka is sprinkled on the family and through every room of the home.

Aashirvachanam

The purohit offers blessings and prasadam to all present.

Duration

How long it takes

Udakasanthi usually takes about 2 to 3 hours, as the parayanam of the Udaka Shanti mantras is extensive. Karishye’s purohit brings everything and times it to the muhurtham.
