Upanayanam Procedure: Step-by-Step Vidhanam
Upanayanam Procedure
The step-by-step Upanayanam vidhanam — from Naandi and sankalpa to Yagnopaveetha Dharanam, Brahmopadesam and bhiksha.

Preparation
The mandapa is set with the homa kund, kalasham and a decorated seat for the child. The boy is given a ceremonial bath and dressed simply. Karishye’s purohit gathers the prescribed samagri, including the yagnopaveetham, krishnajinam, mekhala and danda.
How Upanayanam is performed
Naandi Sraddham
Invoking the blessings of the family’s ancestors before the auspicious rite.
Ganapati Puja & Sankalpa
Worship of Ganesha to remove obstacles, and a vow stating the child’s name, gotram and nakshatram.
Kshouram & Mangala Snanam
Ceremonial haircut (where observed) and sacred bath to purify the child.
Yagnopaveetha Dharanam
The sacred three-strand thread is placed across the child’s left shoulder.
Mekhala, Krishnajinam & Danda
The girdle, deer-skin and palasha staff of the brahmachari are conferred.
Brahmopadesam
The father/guru imparts the Gayatri Mantra into the child’s right ear — the heart of the rite.
Agnikaryam & Bhiksha
The first homa is taught, and the new brahmachari ceremonially seeks bhiksha (alms).
How long it takes
A traditional Upanayanam runs across the muhurtham morning, typically 3–5 hours with the homa and associated rites; some families observe it over two days. Karishye arranges the purohits, timing and all samagri.
Book Upanayanam with Karishye
Verified Telugu purohits, the Brahmopadesam and Gayatri upadesam performed with correct paddhati, and complete eco-friendly samagri included — a serene, authentic ceremony across Telangana & Andhra Pradesh.
