The Heart of the Rite

Brahmopadesam & the Gayatri Mantra

The central moment of Upanayanam is the Brahmopadesam — “the instruction about Brahman.” The father (or guru) whispers the Gayatri Mantra into the child’s right ear, giving him the greatest of all teachings as his very first lesson.

Gayatri Mantra

The first and greatest teaching

“Om Bhur Bhuvah Svah
Tat Savitur Varenyam
Bhargo Devasya Dheemahi
Dhiyo Yo Nah Prachodayat”

We meditate on the adorable glory of the radiant Sun (Savitr), the source of all; may He illumine and inspire our intellect.

Why It Is Given

The meaning of Brahmopadesam

The Gayatri is a prayer for a pure, awakened intellect (dhi). By receiving it the child is set on a path of right understanding, and is asked to chant it with devotion every day during Sandhyavandanam. It is called Brahmopadesam because its inner teaching is that the Self is one with Brahman.

Daily Practice
