Upanayanam Age & Muhurtham: When to Perform
Upanayanam Muhurtham
The right age and the best time to perform Upanayanam — favoured months, periods to avoid, and choosing an auspicious muhurtham.

When to perform Upanayanam
Upanayanam is traditionally performed for a boy around the age of seven or eight (odd years are preferred), with later ages prescribed in some traditions. What matters most is performing it before the child begins serious study, on an auspicious muhurtham.
Favoured periods
Uttarayana
The northern course of the sun (roughly mid-Jan to mid-Jul) is preferred for Upanayanam.
Spring months
Phalguna–Vaisakha (Maasi–Vaisakhi) are especially favoured.
Avoid Dakshinayana & Chaturmasya
The southern solstice period and the four monsoon months are generally avoided.
Child’s nakshatram
The muhurtham is chosen to suit the child’s birth star and the family tradition.
