Doing pitru tarpanam every day? A month's black sesame, darbha and vibhuti come together in the Pitru Tarpanam Kit.
Nalla nuvvulu (నల్ల నువ్వులు) are black sesame seeds. In Hindi they are kala til, in Tamil karuppu ellu and in Kannada kari ellu. White sesame is tella nuvvulu.
How nalla nuvvulu are used
-
Tarpanam – tila tarpanam: water with a few black sesame seeds offered to the pitrus, daily or on Amavasya. See how to do pitru tarpanam at home.
-
Shraddha, Masikam, Abdikam – used throughout the pitru karma.
-
Shani puja and Navagraha – sesame is Shani’s grain; offered on Saturdays and in Navagraha dhanyam.
-
Homam – in some homams, as your purohit directs.
In many Telugu families black sesame is kept for pitru karmas and Shani-related rites and is not used in auspicious functions. Follow your family's custom or ask your purohit.
How much do you need?
Daily tarpanam uses only a pinch, so 250 g lasts about a month. For a shraddha or Abdikam, 250–500 g is usual.
