Arriving late…
is not the same as arriving too late.
Perhaps you have only just learned that this is yours to do.
Many people come to this after a talk, a podcast, or a quiet word from an elder, and realise, sometimes for the first time, that the yearly Pitru Karma was always theirs to perform. If that is you, know this: arriving late is not the same as arriving too late. You are here now, and that is exactly where beginning starts.
But there is one thing worth checking before you begin the yearly puja, and it is the reason this page exists.
The one question this page answers“Can I simply start the yearly puja now, or is something underneath still missing?”
Three things must be complete before the yearly offering can be received.
The tradition lays out a clear foundation. Only when these three are complete is the departed soul established among the Pitru Devatas, and able to receive the yearly Ābdika.

Antyeṣṭi: the last rites, performed properly
The rites at the time of passing, through the first twelve days, must have been performed correctly, guiding the departed from the body onward.

The first year's rites, month by month
Through the first year, the monthly Māsikas and the intermediate rites, in their proper order, must have been performed, keeping the connection unbroken across the year.

Samvatsarīkam and Sapiṇḍīkaraṇa
The first-year rite, including the Sapiṇḍīkaraṇa, must have been performed. This is the rite that brings the departed from the preta state into the fold of the Pitru Devatas. Only after this is the soul ready to receive the yearly Ābdika.
The roof rests on what lies beneath it.
You cannot lay the roof before the foundation.
If the foundation was not completed, if the last rites were incomplete, if the first year's offerings were missed, or if the Sapiṇḍīkaraṇa never happened, then the soul has not yet been settled among the Pitru Devatas. An offering made to a soul that has not been settled does not reach it in the way it should. The tradition is direct here: performed out of sequence, even a sincere yearly offering may not land.
This is not said to frighten you. It is said so that your effort is not wasted, and so that when you offer, it truly reaches. The remedy is simple in principle: complete the foundation first, through the prescribed rectification, and then the yearly rhythm carries its full weight.
- Three things to check first: was the antyeṣṭi performed properly, were the Māsikas of the first year done, and was the Sapiṇḍīkaraṇa done.
- From the Sapiṇḍīkaraṇa onwards the departed takes a place among the Pitru Devatas, and the family becomes eligible to perform the Ābdika.
- Where any of this is missing, or simply not known, there is prāyaścitta. It is a path back, not a punishment.
There are many reasons the foundation may be incomplete, and not one of them is your fault.

- The body was never found, or the person went missing and their fate is unknown.
- Someone left home long ago, and no one knows what became of them.
- There was no one left to perform the rites, or the family line was broken for a generation.
- Years have simply passed with nothing done, and no one is sure where things now stand.
Whichever of these it is, or something not listed here, it can be set right. That is precisely what we do.

The rectification
Where the foundation is broken, the tradition prescribes specific rites of prāyaścitta. Depending on the situation, these may include Nārāyaṇa Bali, and where relevant Nāga Bali and Vṛṣotsarga. These repair what was left incomplete.
Re-establish among the Pitru Devatas
With the rectification complete, we perform what remains so that the departed is properly settled from the preta state into the fold of the Pitru Devatas.
