Vakkalu (వక్కలు) are whole betel nuts, also called areca nuts. In Hindi they are supari, in Tamil pakku and in Kannada adike. In a Telugu puja, vakkalu go with tamalapaku (betel leaves) in almost every step where something is offered.
Where vakkalu are used in a puja
-
Tamboolam – betel leaves with vakkalu offered to the deity, and given to the purohit and to elders and guests.
-
Sankalpam and dakshina – placed with the dakshina on tamalapaku.
-
Kalasam – many families drop a vakka and a coin into the kalasam water.
-
Vayanam – part of the tamboolam given to sumangalis at vratams.
