Chana dal in Telugu is senaga pappu (శెనగ పప్పు) – split, de-husked Bengal gram. The whole seed is senagalu, and its flour is senaga pindi (besan).

How senaga pappu is used

  • Festival sweets – the purnam filling of bobbatlu (polelu) for Ugadi and Sankranti, and senaga pappu payasam.
  • Popu (tempering) – in pulihora, chitrannam and chutneys.
  • Naivedyam – vada, guggillu and sweets offered at vratams and festivals.
  • Guru – whole senagalu are Guru’s (Jupiter’s) grain in navadhanyalu and are offered on Thursdays.
