Bellam (బెల్లం) is jaggery – unrefined sugar made by boiling down sugarcane juice. This is organic bellam: it is darker than refined jaggery and has the fuller taste that naivedyam recipes are made for.
How bellam is used in puja
-
Naivedyam and prasadam – chalimidi, bellam pongali, payasam, vadapappu-panakam on Sri Rama Navami.
-
Jeelakarra bellam – at a Telugu wedding the bride and groom place a paste of cumin and jaggery on each other’s heads at the muhurtham. Read why jeelakarra bellam is placed on the head.
-
With other dravyas – a small piece of bellam is offered with fruit and coconut in many daily and festival pujas.

Bellam is jaggery – unrefined cane sugar. This one is organic.
Which jaggery is used for jeelakarra bellam?
Plain cane jaggery, ground with cumin seeds into a paste. Organic bellam works well because it blends smoothly. Our purohits bring it when you book a Telugu wedding purohit (Vivaham).
Is this the same as patika bellam?
No. Patika bellam is misri – crystallised sugar. See Patika bellam chips.
