Aavu neyyi (ఆవు నెయ్యి) is cow ghee – gaay ka ghee in Hindi. In a puja it is the ghee for the deepam, the ajyam offered into the homam fire, one of the five items of panchamritam and the ghee in naivedyam.
How ghee is used in a puja
-
Homam – ahutis of ghee with the mantras, and the purnahuti at the end. Ghee is also poured on the samidhalu to keep the fire bright.
-
Deepam – a ghee lamp (neyyi deepam), especially in Karthika masam.
-
Abhishekam – with milk, curd, honey and sugar in panchamritam.
-
Naivedyam – pongali, payasam and sweets.

It depends on the homam and the number of ahutis. A Gruhapravesham with homam usually takes about 1 kg; ask your purohit for the exact quantity.
Can I use the same ghee for deepam and naivedyam?
