Vadlu (Paddy Seeds for Pooja) / వడ్లు

Vadlu (వడ్లు) is paddy – rice still in its husk. In puja it stands for dhanyam, the grain that sustains a household, and is used where the procedure calls for unhusked grain rather than rice.

Where vadlu is used

• Kalasa sthapana – the kalasam is placed on a bed of paddy or rice on the peetam.
• Gruhapravesham and homams – the purohit’s list usually asks for 1 kg of vadlu for the kalasam and mandapam.
• Navagraha puja – paddy is the grain of Chandra among the Navadhanyalu (nine grains).

Questions families ask

What is vadlu in English?
Paddy – rice with its husk on. Rice after husking is biyyam.

Can rice be used instead of vadlu?
For the kalasam bed many families use rice (biyyam). Where the purohit specifically asks for vadlu, use paddy. See Tella biyyam (rice).

How much is needed for a Gruhapravesham?
Usually 1 kg. Our Gruhapravesham kit includes it.

Goes well with

Tella biyyam (rice) · Navadhanyalu (nine grains) · Ragi kalasam (copper)
