Yagnopaveetham (యజ్ఞోపవీతం) is the sacred thread, called jandhyam in Telugu, janeu in Hindi and poonal in Tamil. It is first worn at Upanayanam and then worn every day.
When a new yagnopaveetham is needed
-
Upanayanam – the boy receives his first yagnopaveetham. See the yagnopaveetham in Upanayanam guide.
-
Upakarma (Jandhyala Pournami) – the yearly changing of the thread on Shravana Pournami.
-
After sutakam – families change the thread at the end of a birth or death impurity period.
-
When it breaks or gets soiled – it is replaced with a new one, with the mantra.
How many strands?
Customs vary, but commonly a brahmachari wears one yagnopaveetham (three strands) and a married man two (six strands). Some families add one more. If you need a specific type or a larger number for an Upanayanam or Upakarma, message us on WhatsApp before ordering.
