Samidhalu (సమిధలు, samidha in Sanskrit) are the dried twigs offered into the homam fire. They keep the fire alive through the homam and are offered with the mantras, together with cow ghee and the havanam dravyas. The wood used can differ by homam; your purohit will tell you if a specific samidha is needed.
