Before the Ceremony

Preparation

An altar is arranged with idols or photos of Saraswati and Ganesha, and a tray is filled with raw rice. The child is bathed and dressed in new clothes. Karishye’s purohit brings the prescribed samagri, including the rice tray and slate.

How Aksharabhyasam is performed

Ganapati & Saraswati Puja

Worship of Ganesha and Saraswati to begin and to remove obstacles.

Sankalpa

A vow stating the child’s name, gotram, nakshatram and the purpose.

Om on the tongue

The purohit traces “Om” on the child’s tongue (traditionally with gold/honey) for wisdom.

On the elder’s lap

The child sits on the lap of the father, or a paternal/maternal uncle.

Writing in rice

Holding the child’s right index finger, the elder traces the first letters in the rice tray.

First letters on the slate

The child writes the first letters (Om / అ ఆ ఇ ఈ) on the slate.

Aashirvachanam & prasadam

Blessings from elders and the purohit, and distribution of prasadam.
