What Graha Japam is
Graha Japam is the recitation of a graha's mantra a prescribed number of times, by one or more purohits, with a sankalpam made in your name and gotra. It usually ends with a homam using a tenth of the japa count, and offerings in the graha's colour and grain. When all nine planets are addressed together it is called Navagraha Shanti.
It is most often arranged for Shani (Sade Sati, Ashtama Shani), Rahu and Ketu, or for whichever planet's dasha is beginning.
How many times the mantra is recited
The japa count differs by convention. One common rule multiplies the planet's Vimshottari dasha years by 1,000, which gives 19,000 for Shani and 18,000 for Rahu; other families follow different counts, or a shorter japa with a homam. Your purohit confirms the count for your case before the day, and that count is what decides the number of purohits and the time needed.
