Dates are for Hyderabad, from the Telugu (amanta) panchangam. Tithis can shift by a day between calendars; follow your family purohit where they differ.
Karthika Somavaram: the Mondays
Mondays in Karthika are kept for Shiva. Families fast through the day, light a lamp at dusk and, where they can, have Rudrabhishekam performed — abhishekam to a Shiva lingam while Sri Rudram (Namakam and Chamakam) is chanted.
Living away from home, or unable to host it? You can have your family's gotra taken in a Rudrabhishekam every evening of the month, performed in Hyderabad, for ₹3,640.
Eka Rudram or Ekadasa Rudram?
Eka Rudram is one full recitation of Sri Rudram with the abhishekam, and suits most homes. Ekadasa Rudram is Sri Rudram recited eleven times, usually by more than one ritwik, and takes considerably longer. The scales of Rudrabhishekam, explained.
What the abhishekam uses
Water, milk, curd, ghee, honey, sugar and other dravyas, with bilva leaves, vibhuti and flowers. The eleven abhishekam dravyas · full samagri list.
Milk, curd, flowers, fruits and bilva leaves are best bought fresh on the day.
Karthika Pournami: Tuesday 24 November
Pournami is the high point of the month. Lamps are lit in the evening at home and in temples — many families light a lamp with 365 wicks, one for each day of the year — and the day is kept with deepa danam. It is also one of the most common days for the Satyanarayana Vratam at home, and some families observe the Kedareswara Vratam.
Our purohit performs the vratam and the katha at your home, with the samagri brought. Pournami (24 November) and the Ekadasi are the most requested days, so reserve early.
Prefer to do it yourselves? The Satyanarayana Vratam Kit (₹3,850) has the samagri packed to the list.
Karthika Deepam at home
Through the month a lamp is lit at dusk at the tulasi kota, the threshold and the puja room. Ghee or sesame-based deepam oil with cotton wicks is the usual choice; akhanda wicks are used where a lamp is to burn for long.
Other days in the month
Nagula Chavithi (Fri 13 Nov): milk and flowers are offered at the snake mound (putta), praying for the family's protection.
Ksheerabdi Dwadasi (Sat 21 Nov): the tulasi plant is worshipped with an amla branch beside it, marking the marriage of Tulasi and Damodara.
Vana bhojanam: a meal shared under an amla tree, usually on a Sunday or holiday in the month.
Bhagini Hasta Bhojanam (Wed 11 Nov): on the second day of the month, brothers visit their sisters and take a meal served by them.
Karthika Amavasya (Tue 8 Dec) and Poli Swargam (Wed 9 Dec): the month closes on the Amavasya. Early the next morning, Margasira Padyami, many families in Andhra float small lit lamps on rivers and tanks, a rite known as Poli Swargam.
Karthika is one of the months in which Telugu panchangams list gruhapravesham muhurthams, so many families plan their house-warming now. The muhurtham depends on the tithi, nakshatram and your family's stars — have it fixed before you book anything else.
