Akhanda vattulu (అఖండ వత్తులు) are thick, long cotton wicks for the akhanda deepam – a lamp that is kept burning without going out for the length of a vratam, a festival or a set number of days. Ordinary vattulu burn down in a few hours; an akhanda wick lasts much longer.
When families keep an akhanda deepam
- Navaratri and Karthika masam.
- Vratams and homams that run through the day or over several days.
- After a Gruhapravesham, when the lamp is kept lit in the new home.
Keeping it lit
- Use a deep lamp (akhanda diya) and fill it generously with ghee or deepam oil.
- Top up the ghee or oil before it runs low, and trim the wick if it starts to smoke.
- Keep the lamp away from curtains, and use a glass chimney or cover if there is a draught.
