What is kumkumarchana?

Kumkumarchana (కుంకుమార్చన) is a puja to the Goddess in which a pinch of kumkuma is offered with each of her names – most often the 1,000 names of the Lalita Sahasranamam, or the 300 names of the Trishati or the 108 names of the Ashtottaram. Families perform it on Fridays, in Sravana and Karthika masam, during Navaratri, and often as a group of sumangalis.

How the archana is done – in brief

  1. Prepare the place – clean the puja space, draw muggu, and place the Goddess’s image, idol or Sri Chakra on a peetam; light the deepam.
  2. Ganapati puja and sankalpam – a short prayer to Ganapati, then the sankalpam (who is doing the puja, and why).
  3. Offer pasupu, kumkuma, gandham and flowers to the Goddess.
  4. Archana – for each name, say “Om … namaha” and offer a pinch of kumkuma at the Goddess’s feet or onto the Sri Chakra, into the plate.
  5. Dhupam, deepam and naivedyam – agarbatti, the lamp, and the naivedyam with tamboolam.
  6. Harathi – with karpuram; then distribute the archana kumkuma as prasadam.

Questions families ask

How much kumkuma is needed for kumkumarchana?

For a Lalita Sahasranama kumkumarchana by one or two people, about 100 g of kumkuma is usually enough. For a group archana, or if each person offers kumkuma separately, take 250 g. For the 108-name Ashtottaram, 50 g is enough.

Which day is best for kumkumarchana?

Fridays are the most common, along with Sravana masam, Navaratri, Karthika masam, pournami and the family's own festival days. Your purohit or elders can suggest a day.

Can kumkumarchana be done at home without a purohit?

Yes. Many families do a Lalita Sahasranama or Ashtottaram kumkumarchana at home themselves. For a sankalpam-based puja, a vratam or a large group archana, a purohit can lead it.

What do we do with the kumkuma after the archana?

The archana kumkuma is kept as prasadam: worn as bottu, given to sumangalis with tamboolam, or kept in the puja room. Many families do not throw it away; ask your elders for your family's practice.

Can I order the whole list?

Yes. Send the list on WhatsApp with the number of people and your city, and we will pack the dry samagri together. Flowers, fruits and coconuts are best bought fresh near you.
