The Monthly Rite

What is Masikam?

Masikam (Maasikam) is the shraddha performed every month during the first year after a person’s passing, on the lunar tithi of the departed. Each monthly offering of tarpanam and pinda sustains and comforts the soul through its year-long journey, until the first anniversary. It is one of the most important duties a family observes in that first year.

Through the First Year

The monthly observances

Prathama Masikam

The first monthly rite, observed a month after the passing.

The monthly cycle

A masikam is performed each lunar month on the departed’s tithi through the year.

Una-masikam

Certain masikas are performed a little ahead of time, as the shastra prescribes.

Sapindikaranam

Near the year’s end, this rite unites the departed with the Pitrus, completing the cycle.

Why It Matters

Comfort for the departed soul

In tradition, the first year is the soul’s passage from Preta (the departed state) towards becoming a Pitru (an ancestor). The monthly masikams nourish and ease that journey. Karishye’s purohits track the correct tithi for each month so no observance is missed.
