The First Anniversary

What is Samvatsarikam?

Samvatsarikam is the shraddha performed on the first death anniversary — the most significant of the ancestral rites. It marks the soul’s passage from Preta (the departed state) to Pitru (ancestor), when the departed formally joins the lineage of forefathers and begins to bless the family. It is observed on the lunar tithi, one year after the passing.

How It Is Observed

A multi-part rite

Samvatsarikam is traditionally observed across the days around the anniversary — including Unabdikam, Samvatsara-vimokam and the Abdikam — performed with tarpanam, pinda pradanam and brahmana bhojanam. The exact sequence follows the family’s sampradayam, which Karishye’s purohits guide.
